How and Why It Works
A study conducted published in the peer reviewed Journal of Appetite demonstrates that Think Gum® can be used to improve aspects of memory.  In the study, 62 students were given either no chewing gum, regular bubble gum or Think Gum to chew during a series of paper-based and online tested used to measure concentration and memory.  After taking the tests, students were asked to rate their alertness, concentration and performance.  The following day the same students chewed no chewing gum, regular bubble gum or Think Gum and completed some follow up memory tests to measure long-term memory.

The students who chewed Think Gum® performed significantly better in the memory tests.  The magnitude of memory improvement was dramatic as the students in the Think Gum group were able to remember over 25% more than those students who chewed regular chewing gum or no gum at all.  Not only this, but those students in the Think Gum group felt significantly more alert, that they could better concentrate and felt enhanced performance compare to the other groups.

This study suggests that Think Gum® “would also improve information recall in real-world situations, such as during standardized testing, and would therefore be a beneficial study aid.”

Vinpocetine is a cognitive enhancer derived from the lesser periwinkle plant (Vinca minor L.).  It has been shown to improve performance on short-term memory tests (1) and to increase memory functioning in simple word recall tests(2).

Vinpocetine works by acting as a cerebral vasodilator.  This means that it preferentially increases blood flow to the brain.  This is important when you are involved in a mentally strenuous task such as taking a test or focusing on a presentation and your brain is working overtime. 

Vinpocetine also acts as a cerebral-specific calcium-dependent phospodiesterase inhibitor.  This means it slows down the action of an enzyme called phospodiesterase that normally breaks down ATP.  ATP, adenosine triphosphate, is the compound bodies use to provide cellular energy.

Essentially what Vinpocetine does is increase the energy available to our brain cells, allowing us to think harder and better.

Bacopa monniera, also referred to as Brahmi, is a small creeping herb found in moist environments in both India and the Tropics.  Bacopa has been shown to improve speed of information processing, verbal learning rate and memory consolidation in healthy people.  Additionally, Bacopa may improve higher-order cognitive processes dependent on learning and memory.(1)

Within this tiny plant are numerous brain boosting compounds, but the most active ones are bacoside A and bacoside B5. The bacoside compounds are responsible for Bacopa’s ability to enhance nerve transmission.  It is believed that this happens by enhancing neural kinase activity, neuronal synthesis and the restoration of synaptic activity.(2)  It is interesting to note that Bacopa, unlike some of the other herbal additives in Think Gum, is most effective when taken recurrently over the course of a couple of weeks.  This gives the bacosides time to repair damaged nerves and to help regenerate neural synapses. 

The moral of the story is that chewing Think Gum over the long term, will have an even greater effect than just chewing it occasionally.

Ginkgo Biloba is widely regarded as a cognitive enhancer.  Many people take supplements of Ginkgo Biloba to help with forgetfulness and to promote overall mental health.  Although it has been cultivated for thousands of years and used as a memory enhancer for a similar amount of time, science has yet to understand exactly how it works.

Ginkgo Biloba has been shown to improve performance in the Sternberg memory-scanning task in healthy young individuals (1).  This memory task assesses the ability of people to recall information that was given to them on a list.  It is essentially a test to evaluate one’s short-term memory.  This increase in memory is even more pronounced for middle-aged and elderly people and especially for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

It is known that Ginkgo Biloba can improve blood flow, but this does not explain all of its effects.  It is thought that some of the active compounds including flavonoid glycosides and ginkolides, might protect cells from oxidative stress and therefore programmed cell death.(2)  There is preliminary evidence suggesting that regular use may even delay the onset of dementia.(3)

Even if you have no idea what context-dependent memory is, you have experienced it many times.  Have you ever heard a song, and suddenly remembered something completely unrelated to the song?  Have you ever seen something that triggered a memory, that had nothing to do with what you just saw?  More often than not, the stimulus (song or image) is subconsciously linked with the original context in which you experienced it. 

These are examples of context-dependent memory or where the context in which you learn, see or hear something affects your recall and retention of such information.  The context in which you learn something includes the room in which you hear or see the information, what you are doing at the time and even what the air smells like.
